KitchenAid Wine Refrigeration LO Error: Zone Temperature Low

What Does KitchenAid Wine Cooler Error Code LO Mean? LO on a KitchenAid wine cellar indicates a zone is reading below its setpoint by a significant margin. This is the opposite of HI — the unit is over-cooling and risks freezing wine. The control board monitors actual versus target temperature and sets LO when the […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. An over-cooling zone risks freezing wine, which can push corks out or damage flavor. Do not store valuable bottles until the fault is resolved.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Correcting an accidentally-low setpoint clears LO immediately. A hardware-caused LO does not clear and requires service.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Wine visibly frozen or crystallized in bottles, Glass cracking sounds from inside the cabinet.

Symptoms You May Notice

Zone display reads below setpoint

The current temperature shows several degrees below target — for example, 42°F when set to 55°F — and the reading has been dropping rather than recovering.

Frost or condensation on bottles near cooling element

Bottles positioned closest to the cooling element or air outlet show frost formation or heavy condensation when removed, indicating temperature has dropped well below dew point.

Compressor running almost constantly

The compressor duty cycle is essentially 100% — instead of cycling on and off, it runs continuously because the control cannot reach setpoint with the current problem.

Possible Causes

1

Temperature sensor failed low

The NTC thermistor in the affected zone has drifted or failed, reporting a higher temperature than actually present. The control responds by over-cooling because it thinks the zone is warm.

2

Control board relay stuck closed

The relay that drives the compressor or cooling element has welded contacts, keeping it on regardless of the temperature signal. The zone cools continuously until the breaker is cycled.

3

Setpoint accidentally set too low

The control was set to a temperature below the intended storage point, possibly during cleaning or by someone unfamiliar with the unit. Check the setpoint before assuming a fault.

DIY Possible

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Verify the zone setpoint

Check the current setpoint on the control panel. For most red wines the correct value is 55–58°F and for white wines 45–50°F. If the setpoint has been changed to an unusually low value, reset it to the appropriate target.

Some KitchenAid wine cellars have a child lock feature — engage it after setting the target temperature to prevent accidental changes.

  2. 2

Transfer temperature-sensitive bottles if LO persists

If the setpoint is correct but the zone keeps cooling below it, move delicate wines (particularly whites and sparkling wines) away from the cooling element to prevent freezing.

A bottle of wine that has frozen and thawed may still be drinkable but will have lost structure and complexity. Avoid freezing at all costs for valuable bottles.

When to Call a Professional
