KitchenAid Dishwasher 2-1 Error: Thermistor Fault

What Does KitchenAid Dishwasher Error Code 2-1 Mean? The 2-1 blink code on a KitchenAid dishwasher — two blinks of the Clean light, a pause, then one blink — points to a fault with the water temperature sensor, also called the NTC thermistor. This sensor sits in the sump area and continuously reports the wash […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. If the dishwasher completes cycles after a reset, it can be used carefully — but the sanitize cycle and heated dry may not function correctly. Avoid running lightly soiled loads that rely on high-temperature washing to be safe.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. A breaker reset clears the 2-1 code. If the thermistor has intermittently failed, the code returns partway through the wash stage. A permanently failed sensor returns the code on every cycle.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: 2-1 appears on every cycle without completing the wash stage, Dishes are consistently cold and unclean after the cycle ends.

Symptoms You May Notice

Dishes come out wet or covered in food residue

Without confirmed water temperature, the heated dry and sanitize steps may not run correctly, leaving dishes damp and poorly cleaned.

Clean light blinks two times, pauses, then once

The 2-1 blink pattern appears on the Clean indicator after the cycle halts, repeating every few seconds.

Cycle pauses in the main wash stage

The dishwasher stops advancing past the heated wash phase because the thermistor reading is out of range.

Possible Causes

1

Failed NTC thermistor element

The temperature sensor in the sump or water circuit has drifted out of specification and reads an impossible temperature value.

Requires Professional
2

Disconnected thermistor wiring harness

The two-wire connector that links the thermistor to the control board has come loose, giving the board an open-circuit reading.

DIY Possible
3

Control board input circuit failure

The thermistor itself tests good, but the analog input on the control board that reads the sensor has failed internally.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Reset and run a cycle

Turn off the dishwasher circuit breaker for five minutes, restore power, and run a Normal wash. If the cycle completes, the fault was transient.

Thermistor faults can appear temporarily if the dishwasher is powered up from cold in a very cool basement — a full cycle often clears the code once operating temperature is reached.

  2. 2

Check for visible thermistor connection issues

Remove the lower rack and filter basket. Look for any loose wire harness near the sump at the bottom of the tub. Do not unplug connectors unless a connector is visibly displaced.

The thermistor connector is usually gray or white and sits near the pump housing. A connector that is slightly off-center is easy to reseat without tools.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Thermistor measures outside the 10–100 kΩ range at room temperature
  • Code returns immediately after every power restore
  • Harness connector is intact but thermistor still reads fault
