KitchenAid Dryer F3 Error: Moisture Sensor Fault

What Does KitchenAid Dryer Error Code F3 Mean? F3 on a KitchenAid dryer indicates a fault in the moisture sensor circuit. The moisture sensor consists of two metal strips inside the drum that measure electrical conductivity across tumbling laundry — wet clothes conduct more than dry clothes. The board uses this reading to decide when […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. The dryer is safe to use on Timed Dry cycles. Only automatic moisture sensing is affected by F3.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Cleaning the sensor bars clears F3 caused by residue fouling. A hardware fault does not clear and requires service.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: F3 persists after thorough sensor bar cleaning, Additional fault codes appearing alongside F3.

Symptoms You May Notice

Sensor Dry cycles ending immediately

Auto Dry or Sensor Dry cycles shut off after just a few minutes rather than running to proper dryness. Clothes come out still wet.

Sensor Dry cycles running much too long

The opposite symptom — Auto Dry cycles run for hours without ending. Clothes are already dry but the sensor is reporting wet.

Timed Dry cycles still work normally

Manual Timed Dry cycles work fine because they do not depend on the moisture sensor. Only automatic cycles are affected.

Possible Causes

1

Moisture sensor bars fouled or scratched

The two metal sensor bars inside the drum (usually on the front bulkhead) have become coated with fabric softener residue or worn from years of tumbling contact. Clean regularly for best sensor operation.

2

Sensor harness broken or disconnected

The wiring harness running from the sensor bars to the main control board has a broken conductor or is disconnected.

3

Control board sensor input failure

The analog input that reads the moisture sensor has failed on the control board, producing invalid readings regardless of sensor condition.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the moisture sensor bars

Open the dryer door and locate the two thin metal strips on the front bulkhead (inside the drum opening). Wipe them with a soft cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove fabric softener residue. Dry and close the door.

Fabric softener sheet residue is the single biggest cause of moisture sensor issues. Cleaning the bars monthly prevents most F3 errors.

  2. 2

Use Timed Dry until service if F3 persists

Timed Dry cycles do not depend on the moisture sensor and work normally even with F3 active. Use them for normal laundry until the sensor issue is resolved — set time based on load size and fabric type.

Timed Dry is less energy efficient than Auto Dry because you cannot always predict exactly when clothes will be dry, but it is a perfectly safe and functional alternative.

When to Call a Professional
