KitchenAid Washer LF Error: Long Fill Time

What Does KitchenAid Washer Error Code LF Mean? LF on a KitchenAid washer stands for Long Fill — the fill cycle has exceeded its maximum allowed time without reaching the target water level. The board monitors fill progress via the pressure sensor and sets LF when water does not arrive fast enough. This is almost […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. LF prevents cycles from starting, but the washer itself is not damaged. Once flow is restored, normal operation resumes.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Opening the supply valves or cleaning screens clears LF immediately. A failed water inlet valve does not clear and requires service.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: LF persists after valves confirmed open and screens cleaned, Water leakage from the inlet valve area.

Symptoms You May Notice

Washer fills slowly or not at all

Water enters the tub noticeably slower than normal, or not at all. The washer times out and shows LF rather than proceeding to the wash phase.

Water supply hoses cool or not vibrating

Normally you can feel the supply hoses vibrate gently when water is flowing. Absence of vibration indicates very low or no flow.

LF appears at the beginning of every cycle

The fault appears during the fill phase of every wash cycle attempted. Water never reaches the target level within the timeout window.

Possible Causes

1

Water supply valves closed or partially closed

The hot and cold water supply valves at the wall have been closed or partially closed, restricting flow below the minimum. This is the most common LF cause and is the first thing to check.

DIY Possible
2

Supply hose inlet screens clogged

Small mesh screens at the water inlet connections on the back of the washer have accumulated mineral scale and sediment, restricting flow to a trickle.

3

Water inlet valve solenoid failed

The solenoid-operated fill valve inside the washer has failed partially — still opens but with reduced flow area, or one of the two solenoids (hot or cold) has failed entirely.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Open water supply valves fully

Check both hot and cold water supply valves at the wall behind the washer. Both should be fully open — handle parallel to the supply pipe for ball valves, or fully counterclockwise for gate valves.

Valves sometimes get bumped partially closed during cleaning or when moving items near the washer. Both valves need to be fully open for proper fill.

  2. 2

    Clean the inlet screens

Turn off the water supply and disconnect both supply hoses from the back of the washer. Pry out the small mesh screens inside the inlet connections and rinse them thoroughly with running water. Reinstall and reconnect.

Screens clogged with hard-water mineral scale may need soaking in vinegar before rinsing to break up deposits.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Water inlet valve replacement clears the fault
  • Individual solenoid resistance measures incorrect
  • Supply pressure measurably below specification
